Introduction
Technology is not an aim by itself but needs to be applied. One of the primary objectives of Directorate of Technical and Quality Management is developing ready to use technologies. Consequently the ESA Techno Innovation Days shall:

  • Communicate major technology achievements of the past year and future technology trends with a special view on multi-purpose technologies.
  • Reflect on the way we achieve innovation for space

Innovation is new stuff that is made useful”, a recent quote brings the purpose of the ESA Technology Innovation Day to the point and leads to the subsequent questions for the space sector’s capability to innovate:

- Do we pursue the right goals?
- How to get from an idea to an innovation?
- How to transfer to space from non-space ?

Innovation for space can address several areas:

• Technology and Products:  faster, lighter…
• Processes:  new ways/methods how put things together and operate them
• Business Model: The opening of a new applications, new partnerships

Space is often associated with a faster, lighter, more performance oriented product environment or with opening up new applications, the second point is often forgotten. It is the intention not be limited to new products but also to provide adequate presentation on the way we design, built and assemble mission incl. associated  systems engineering tools.
